Is the Lighting in Your Home Working Against You?
Why healthier lighting is becoming one of the biggest conversations in smart home design
For decades, people have thought about the lighting in our homes in fairly simple terms:
- Is it bright enough?
- Does it look good?
- Does it do what we want (accent, ambience, task)?
- Can we control it easily and effectively?
But today we’re asking a different question altogether: how does the light we live with affect the way we sleep, think and feel?
It’s a subject attracting increasing attention from researchers, architects, interior designers and wellbeing specialists alike, and while much of the media discussion focuses on ‘blue light’, the reality is rather more nuanced: it’s not simply about colour temperature, it’s about the quality of light itself.
As our understanding of human biology grows, we’re beginning to appreciate that lighting isn’t just about illuminating our homes, it’s about supporting the way our bodies naturally work.
We evolved under the sun, not LEDs.
For hundreds of thousands of years, humans lived almost entirely by natural daylight and, as we know, natural daylight isn’t a constant – it’s continuously changing throughout each day.
Morning light is cool and rich in blue wavelengths, helping to wake us up and regulate our internal body clock. As the day progresses, sunlight gradually changes and by sunset the light becomes warmer, softer and lower in intensity, signalling to our brains that it’s time to slow down and prepare for sleep.
Our bodies have evolved around this daily rhythm; however modern homes often expose us to the exact opposite.
Bright LEDs (and still a few halogen lights lurking around) often remain switched on long into the evening. Televisions, tablets, laptops and smartphones continue stimulating our eyes with blue-rich light well after sunset.
The result can be confusion for our internal clock.

More than just blue light.
Blue light has become something of a buzzword, almost a villain for disrupted sleep and, in turn, the demise in our collective (un)wellbeing.
While excessive exposure to blue-rich light late in the evening can suppress melatonin (the hormone that helps us sleep) it isn’t accurate to suggest that blue light itself is inherently harmful. After all, natural daylight contains plenty of blue light, so the issue is timing.
Receiving blue-rich light during the day is healthy and important but receiving the same light in the evening and late at night may delay sleep, reduce sleep quality and affect our body’s natural circadian rhythm.
This is why many experts now prefer to talk about human-centric lighting or circadian lighting, rather than simply ‘reducing blue light.’
LED flicker.
One unwanted aspect of lighting receives far less attention than it deserves: flicker.
Many LED fittings don’t produce completely continuous light; instead, they switch on and off incredibly quickly, often hundreds or even thousands of times every second. Although this flicker is usually invisible to the human eye, our brains can still detect it.
Research suggests that poor-quality LED lighting may contribute to:
- eye strain
- headaches
- visual fatigue
- reduced comfort during prolonged exposure
- distraction in sensitive individuals
Not everyone experiences these effects but for people working from home, reading, cooking or spending long evenings indoors, the quality of light can make a noticeable difference.
As with many aspects of smart home design, the specification behind the scenes often matters far more than what we actually see.
