A Victorian Villa Reimagined in Hale
Working alongside Oliver James Construction as lead contractor and Gail Marsden Design on interiors and lighting, Majik House was brought in to deliver the smart lighting, audio-visual systems, networking and control throughout the newly unified home.
From the outset, the vision was clear: preserve the elegance of the original Victorian architecture while discreetly introducing smart home technologies.
Lighting That Enhances the Architecture
Lighting plays a defining role throughout the house. Rather than dominating the interiors, it quietly enhances them – highlighting period details, softening spaces, and creating atmosphere as the day shifts into evening.
Smart lighting runs throughout the home, controlled via Control4, allowing every member of the family to enjoy simple, intuitive control. Carefully designed scenes transition effortlessly from bright and functional to warm and relaxed, supporting both everyday life and entertaining.
Automated Silent Gliss blinds feature throughout many rooms, particularly in the rear extension, where full-height glazing opens the home to the garden at the touch of a button.
A Contemporary Garden Room
At the rear of the house, the mood changes. The garden room extension introduces a more contemporary language; clean lines, smooth surfaces and expansive glazing that floods the space with natural light.
Despite the modest garden size, this room feels generous and open, blurring the boundary between inside and out. In warmer months it becomes a hub for entertaining; in winter, it remains bright, calm and connected to the outdoors.
The space includes a large lounge, dining area and kitchen, with discreet audio, a striking 85” television and lighting that adapts effortlessly to the time of day.
Spaces to Retreat and Relax
Elsewhere, the home offers a more intimate counterpoint. A separate lounge and a refined ‘snug’ retain a quieter, more traditional feel, softened by natural stone, a wood-burning stove and subtle glimpses of the original brickwork.
Throughout the house, technology remains intentionally unobtrusive. Televisions, audio and lighting are seamlessly integrated, always present when needed and invisible when not.
Entertainment Below Ground
Descending to the lower ground floor reveals some of the home’s most indulgent spaces.
A dedicated cinema room delivers an immersive experience, with rich sound, cinematic visuals and atmospheric lighting that makes movie nights feel truly special. Adjacent to this, a golf simulator and bar create a space that’s equally suited to practice, play and entertaining friends whatever the weather outside.
A fully equipped home gym completes the picture, allowing fitness routines to fit effortlessly into daily life, while discreet audio and visual systems keep the space engaging and motivating.
A Feature Wine Store
One of the most striking design moments appears in the stairwell: a temperature-controlled wine store, set behind glass and beautifully illuminated. What might once have been a forgotten space has become a focal point – practical, elegant and quietly impressive.
Comfort, Security and Control
Behind the scenes, the home benefits from whole-house control that keeps everything running smoothly from heating and security to lighting, audio and blinds. Despite the scale of the renovation and the breadth of systems involved, the experience remains simple and intuitive.
A Collaborative Build
The project unfolded over approximately 18 months, with close collaboration between the client, builders, designers and installers. Early coordination ensured that technology was woven seamlessly into the fabric of the house, rather than added later.
The Result
Like Hale itself, this home balances old and new with confidence. A traditional red-brick villa that sits comfortably within its surroundings, yet offers contemporary spaces, modern comforts and exceptional flexibility for family life.
What were once two houses are now one cohesive home; it’s generous, welcoming and beautifully considered, a place that feels as good to live in as it does to look at.
