A Contemporary Woodland Retreat at Alderley Edge, Cheshire

Alderley Edge has a habit of revealing itself slowly. On misty autumn days, when low cloud drifts through the trees and damp leaves line the lanes, the village feels quietly theatrical — dramatic without ever needing to announce itself.

Tucked just beyond the centre of the village, with its back to the ancient woodland rising towards the Edge, this family home sits in gentle seclusion. From the viewpoint above, it is almost invisible, quietly absorbed into the landscape — a fitting reflection of the way the house now lives within its setting.

“Majik House took on-board our ethos of having a high tech home which incorporates and reflects minimalistic design. Everything can be controlled by simple clicks either from within the home or away.

Our rural setting means we wanted to bring the outside in, and vice versa; through working with Majik House, we can preset our lighting to our own personalised configurations for different times of the day.

With frequent amendments and queries from us, no request is ever too much trouble with this company.”

A Restrained Transformation

Alderley Edge is often associated with bold statements and overt luxury, yet this home takes a different path. Purchased by the current owners in 2017, the farmhouse had already evolved over time, shaped by previous extensions and modernisations.

Working alongside NC Architecture, the brief was not to reinvent the house entirely, but to refine it; retaining the existing footprint and structure, making modest changes to the internal layout, and allowing light, materials and surroundings to do the heavy lifting.

The result is a home that feels calm, grounded and quietly confident.

A New Sense of Arrival

The most striking external change is the new full-height entrance. Where once a solid timber door sat within traditional red brick, a two-storey glazed façade now opens the house to the landscape beyond.

Framed by timber cladding finished in a heritage grey, the entrance hall offers an immediate connection between inside and out. A custom steel and oak staircase rises through the space, while a cascading blown-glass light installation follows its descent – a sculptural feature that feels perfectly at home in the shifting hues of the seasons.

Descending the stairs, the boundary between house and countryside almost disappears, as though stepping down through low cloud and into the landscape itself.

Spaces Designed to Flow

Inside, the house unfolds naturally. Rooms are generous without feeling oversized, allowing the owners’ carefully curated mix of modern and vintage furniture to sit comfortably within each space.

Natural light plays a central role. Nearly every room benefits from full-height glazing, drawing the surrounding farmland and woodland deep into the home. Majik House’s lighting design builds gently upon this, enhancing rather than overpowering what is already present.

Lighting throughout the house is controlled via Control4, allowing scenes to change subtly and at a pace that feels in tune with the building with soft transitions rather than abrupt shifts, supporting the calm rhythm of daily life.

Living with the Landscape

At the rear of the house, sliding glass walls open onto a tranquil, Zen-inspired garden. Here, the boundary between interior and exterior dissolves completely.

Corten steel arches, now weathered into warm rust tones, frame views of carefully planted foliage all gently highlighted by discreet ground lighting. A softly illuminated stone water feature adds movement and sound, reinforcing the sense of retreat.

Even from the master bathroom, the experience remains immersive. With the windows open, soaking in the bath feels less like being indoors and more like floating within the woodland canopy beyond.

Calm by Design

There is an unmistakable sense of flow throughout the house, a feeling that nothing needs to be hurried. Lighting scenes respond slowly and naturally, audio fills spaces without demanding attention, and technology remains firmly in the background.

Much of the lighting uses Majik House’s own LED fittings, designed to deliver smooth dimming, accurate colour temperature and seamless integration with intelligent control systems. The effect is light that feels alive and responsive, yet entirely unobtrusive.

Thoughtful Audio and Visual Integration

Audio and visual systems are introduced with the same restraint. In some spaces, technology is visible – a television here, a pair of elegant floor-standing speakers there – while elsewhere it disappears entirely into ceilings and walls.

Music flows effortlessly from room to room, and television, audio, lighting, security and heating are all operated through a single, intuitive control system. Whether using a handheld remote, wall-mounted keypad or mobile device, control feels natural and uncomplicated.

Heating follows the same philosophy, with smart control allowing comfort to be adjusted easily without fuss.

A Rooftop Escape

A single-storey wing extending from the house houses a wine store, gym, office and garage. Above it, a roof terrace introduces an entirely different mood.

Here, a stainless-steel outdoor kitchen, bespoke brick pizza oven and generous seating create a space made for long summer evenings. Discreet outdoor speakers provide atmosphere without intrusion, while carefully positioned lighting ensures the terrace feels welcoming long after daylight fades.

A Quietly Exceptional Home

By the end of the visit, there is a noticeable sense of calm. What began as a grey, rain-soaked journey through Cheshire ends feeling closer to time spent at a country retreat.

This is not a home that seeks attention. Instead, it offers sanctuary and a place where modern living, thoughtful technology and the natural world sit comfortably side by side.

It is a house that understands its setting, respects its past, and quietly enhances the lives of those who live within it.
