Meet… Zuma Light and Sound
A quarter of a century is a long time and since we established Majik House back in 1998 we’ve seen a lot of products and technologies enter the smart home market.
Some of these have become the trusted, dependable staples of our industry, developing a reputation for quality and user experience. Others, well, have fallen by the wayside and for good reason.
The Majik House approach has always been to thoroughly test and appraise products before we consider them for client projects; this usually means installing in our own homes and seeing how well they work and what they are like to live with.
We became aware of Zuma Light & Sound in early 2023 and the concept of their Lumasonic product intrigued us: a stylish, LED downlight with accompanying smart control app, but also incorporating a compact loudspeaker.
We had to find out more.
Zuma Array Ltd is a British company and the ‘clean living’ concept behind their products is very clear: ‘to deliver on the promise of smart technology by making brilliant sound and light simple for any home to achieve.’
The desire to do away with visible speakers, cables, amplifiers and controls is something we’re very much on-board with, and the Zuma Lumasonic products certainly achieve this as the speakers are all but invisible, just a modest grille surrounding the light aperture.
The app links in with all the leading audio streaming services (Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal etc), so there’s the immediate benefit of familiarity on that front.
Although they can be used as single units, the best performance obviously comes when they are distributed across a ceiling in an array to provide a fuller, more rounded audio experience.
On the lighting side, the proprietary Zuma app also offers ‘total ambient lighting control’ with personalised control over intensity and colour options. There’s also the option for the light output to track the natural light of the sun throughout the day, the benefits of circadian lighting being known to improve wellbeing and aid sleep quality.
“We’ve also integrated Zuma Lumasonic into our showroom control systems [Control4 and Lutron Homeworks] and are very impressed with the performance.” says Majik House Operations Manager, Autumn Burrow.
“The array set-up incorporates 10 Zuma units [combination of Lumasonic and Luminaire], so a similar number of lights that you might find in a decent sized dining room or kitchen. Whether we’re using the Lutron touchpads or their own app, the control and transitions between the lighting scenes are very smooth so we really can’t fault them.”
“The sound quality is also very impressive from the four Lumasonic units, given they are quite compact loudspeakers; it’s a full and warm sound, plenty of depth.”
“If someone has limited space and the more standard in-ceiling speakers are not an option, then Zuma Lumasonic would definitely be worth considering and is a solution that Majik House are more than happy to introduce to our clients.”
This is a product that can also be integrated across the home as Zuma Lumisonic is IP65 rated, meaning they are safe to install in kitchens and bathrooms, and are designed for long-life performance even in moisture-heavy environments.
“It’s such a clever idea and one that works incredibly well.” Concludes Autumn, “We had to be certain of their performance before we started even mentioning them but, having lived with Zuma over the last six months or more, we know what a great addition they can be to any smart home.”
